Time Flies, But Are You Even Watching?
We often say “time flies” casually — after birthdays, deadlines, vacations, or another exhausting workweek. But maybe time isn’t flying. Maybe we are, rushing through moments without ever fully living them.
Modern life has normalised distraction. We wake up to notifications, rush through meetings, eat while scrolling, and end the day mentally exhausted, yet strangely unfulfilled. Most people are busy almost every hour, but fully present in very few of them.
The numbers are alarming. Research shows the average employee loses nearly 31 hours every month in unproductive meetings, while workplace interruptions take over 23 minutes to regain focus from. Most professionals manage barely 2–3 hours of truly focused work in an entire workday.
Outside work, things are not very different. The average person now spends more than 6 hours daily on screens, adding up to almost 11 years of a lifetime spent looking at devices. Yet meaningful conversations with family often shrink to less than 20 minutes a day.
The real crisis today is not poor time management.
It is poor attention management.
We keep postponing life:
- “I’ll rest after this quarter.”
- “I’ll focus on health after this project.”
- “I’ll spend more time with family once things settle down.”
But life rarely “settles down.”
It simply keeps moving.
One powerful line from the Bhagavad Gita captures this perfectly:
कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन
Focus on your actions, not constant anxiety about outcomes.
Even outside spirituality, this idea is deeply practical. Most stress comes from obsessing over results we cannot fully control — promotions, market conditions, validation, future uncertainty. Meanwhile, the present moment quietly slips away.
The harsh truth is:
Most people are not tired because they work too hard. They are tired because their mind is scattered in too many directions at once.
Being present sounds simple, but it has become rare:
- Listening without checking your phone.
- Working without switching tabs every two minutes.
- Sitting with family without mentally being at work.
- Taking a walk without consuming content.
Somewhere along the way, many of us became CEOs of unread emails, unfinished watchlists, and screenshots we will never revisit. We say “just 5 minutes” on social media and suddenly it’s dark outside, the tea is cold, and the day is gone.
These small moments are not distractions from life.
They are life.
At the end of the day, ask yourself
What was I fully present for today?
What consumed my time without adding value?
Which moments would I actually want to relive?
Because time is not just passing.
Your life is.
And one day, we will all realise the same thing:
The most valuable moments were never the rushed ones. They were the moments we were actually there for.
What’s one moment from the last 7 days that you were truly present for — without distractions, stress, or checking your phone?
